Is My Job Too Secular for God? An Open Letter to My Daughter

Dear My Daughter,

Congratulations! You are in a wonderful season of your life and going through it with grace and dignity. You call it anxious and scary but I say fun and thrilling. You have done significant internships and found out what makes your heart beat just a bit faster. I am confident that you will be excellent in whatever you choose to do.

I would have to admit, you are much more intelligent, confident and brave than I was at your age. You know your strengths and interests and focused on getting better at what you lack. "Sometimes, I wonder if Marketing is too secular, not holy enough to serve God. I don't even know how I would serve God in this field." Praise God! My heart sang when those words flowed out of your lips. It was obvious that you have been pondering on this a lot. I can tell that you are genuinely searching for God's ways in your life. A pure joy to a Christian mother's heart when you know your children are walking in faith.Thank you!

As a young Christian woman I really wanted to dedicate my life to God and wanted to live a holy life that is sacrificial and set a part for God but the world seemed too scary and powerful. I felt both scared and guilty for wanting to go into the secular world, whatever that meant. Feeling confused and lost I questioned: Am I a bad Christian for wanting to have a secular job? Would only way to serve God be going into a full time ministry? You are not alone in this search. I am sure many young Christian men and women are looking for direction, especially those who grew up within the four walls of church. Congratulations, you are growing in Christ!

Being holy means breaking out of the four walls of church (Mark 16:15). Being holy means having pure thoughts and doing pure things (Psalm 24:4). Being holy means you working hard and giving your best (Proverbs 12:27). Being holy means knowing your God and honor Him in all that you are and do (Colossians 1:10). Being holy means clinging onto your Lord (Psalm 62:7). Being holy means knowing who you are in Christ (1 Corinthians 3;16). Being holy means being compassionate for the weak and needy (James 1:7). Being holy means being humble (James 4:10).

So, do not fear. Go out there and be the salt and light of the world (Matthews 5:13-16) and be holy. You can be confident that God has you under his mighty wings (Psalm 91:4).  I love you!

Love,
Mom
