Prayer for My Children Day 15

Day 15: Generosity "Grant that my children may be generous and willing to share, and so lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age" (1Tim 6:18-19)

 About 12 years ago when I was still serving as a Regional Director for NY/NJ MPAK (Mission to Promote Adoption of Kids) chapter, along with another organization, we held a fundraising event. Many famous Korean Christian musicians came to perform in the concert at this mega church in NY. MPAK leaders flew in from LA and Korea. We had big dreams to raise awareness about the needs of the orphans in Korea and how Christians are called to take care of the orphans and the widows. Big dreams, big event!  Well, it wasn't that easy, the huge concert hall was almost empty that evening. Instead of praising God along with the musicians on the stage, I was busy and heartbroken looking around the empty hall. It was a disaster. I wanted to cry. Everyone involved was upset and disappointed. I think the other organization had their own internal dispute. It was a disappointment in every sense. MPAK leaders were gathered by the stage trying to comfort one anther for this obvious failure, a staff person came over and gave us an envelop. He said, "A poorly dressed older lady gave this envelop to deliver to you. She said this is all she has to give right now." Puzzled at the message we opened up the white envelop. In it was a small gold ring and a few cents. We immediately felt silent in tears. All of us standing there were reminded of the story of the widow's mite. A huge church building stands but refuses to look to the orphans, but a poorly dressed old lady was compelled to give her gold ring, which probably didn't have much monetary value but her heart. We also knew that it was a token of Jesus' love for our effort on behalf of the orphans. It was a huge encouragement!

Generosity isn't only about giving money to the poor from the rich. It's also about being fulfilled with the Holy Spirit so that we are able to give our last gold ring to the next person who will be reminded of God's love for them. The gold ring is in MPAK office in Korea. It's not even in my possession, but the gold ring has made a deep impression on my heart forever.

불안 극복기

우리 아들은 아기때 부터 불안감이 심했다. 사람은 물론이고, 환경, 물건, 장소, 음식등 새로 대해야 하는 모든것을 힘들어 하고 두려워했다. 십대가 된 지금도 옷이나 신발은 매일 똑같은 것만 착용한다.  한 서너살 즘 내가 입던 낡은 잠옷을 버리려고 한곳에 모아 두었는데, 그것을 들고 냄새 맡고 있는 아이를 보고 더 오랫동안 그 잠옷을 버리지 못했던 기억이 있다. 그런 아이를 지켜보는 나는 안스럽기도 했고, 안절부절 하기도했고, 때로는 짜증스럽기도 했다. 자라면서 새로운 운동이나 악기를 배우는 일도 아이는 정말 싫어하고 울고불고 하면서 불안해 했기 때문이다. 입양으로 9개월 됬을때 만난 우리 아들이 처음 집으로 온날, 아이가 쉬지않고 울며 불안해 했던 그 눈빛을 잊을수가 없다. 나는 불안해 하는 아이를 안고 밤을 새운날이 수없이 많았다. 사람들은 불쌍한 아이가 부모 만났는데 뭐가 두려우냐고 했지만, 어린아이라도 자신이 있던 익숙한 환경에서 송두리째 빼내어 지고, 자신의 의지와 관계없이 바껴버린 사람들이 얼마나 두렵고 힘들었을까 지금도 생각하면 마음이 아프다.  태어났을때 병원에서 기관으로, 위탁가정으로 그리고 가정으로 오기까지 아이는 이해되지 않은 많은 헤어짐을 경험했을것이다. 우리 아이의 마음을 읽어주려고 침대에서 프리스쿨 다닐때 까지 데리고 잤다. 큰아이들 둘은 태어나자 마자 자신의 크립에서 떨어져 재웠는데, 셋째인 아들은 한 침대에서 엄마아빠의 숨결을 느끼고 냄새를 맡으며 지냈다. 자라면서도 엄마,아빠와 떨어지는것을 심하게 두려워 하고 불안했던 아들은 널서리간 첫날 목을 놓아 울며 안그래도 아들에게 약한 엄마의 마음도 불안하게 만들었다. 혹시 우리 아이가 다른 장애가 있는걸까? 몸도 힘들고 마음도 힘들고,짜증스러울때도 많았다. 4살쯤 운동을 시키면 좋아질것 같아서 축구 클라스에 등록했는데 엄마옆에 붙어 앉아 울기만했다. 넓은 잔듸에서 뛰어 노는 다른 아이들을 바라보면 옆에 앉아 있는 우리애가 못나보이고 걱정이 됬지만, 여덟번 클...

Time to Fight!

나는 집에서 애키우고 살림하는것 보다는 밖에나가서 무엇인가 이루는것을 항상 갈망한다. 집안살림에 관심이나 능력이 없어서 그렇다기 보다는 내안에 쉬지않고 꿈틀거리는 불 같은것이 있기 때문이라는걸 알게되기 까지는 관찰과 믿음통해 얻게된 자존감때문이다. 그리고 내안에 꺼지지않는 갈망이 있다는걸 남편도 인정해 주기까지 오랜 갈등의 시간이 필요했던것 같다. 안타까운 마음에 남편은 아직도 편하게 살면될걸 왜 사서고생 하려고 하냐고 한다. 그러게.... 내나이 40에 대학원에 진학했다. 남들은 팔자좋은 아줌마가 취미로 대학원 가냐고 하기도 했지만, 시작부터도 거대한 두려움과 싸웠고 어린아이넷 키우며 남들은 2년에 끝내는 과정을 5년 동안 길게 공부하던 내내 싸워낸 시간이었다. 대학원 마치자마자 강연초대가 되기 시작했고 이젠 무엇인가 이루나보다 했을때 암진단을 받았다. 겨우 3년 그것도 성에 차지않을만큼 천천히 쌓아지던 t커리어가 여기서 끝인가보다 생각됬고 이럴려고 5년동안 힘겹게 공부했을까 하는마음에 억울했다. 암과 싸우던 시간동안 마음을 비워내는 작업도 혼자서 해냈다. 커리어도 지식도 사역도 좋은일도 종이짝처럼 버려도 괞찮다는 마음이 됬었고 마지막시간이 주어진다면 내가족만 있으면 된다고 생각하게 되었다. 하나님은 나의포커스를 또다시 가족에게 맞추시나 하는생각을 했다. 나는 늘 두려움과 불안함을 안고 살아간다. 언젠가 암으로 죽을거라는 두려움. 언제 죽을지 모른다는, 죽음이 빠르게 올것이라는 불안감. 불안감은 나에게 속삭인다. 아무것도 하지마. 언제 죽을지도 모르는데 어떻게 정리할거야? 집에서 가만히있어. 죽을 준비를 깨끗하게 해야지... 항암 끝난지 3년이 지나고 보는 사람마다 건강해 보인다고 한다. 하지만 나는 늘 어딘가 아프고 어딘가 괴롭고 어딘가 힘들다. 사람들이 나를보고 건강하다고 말하면 사실은 그렇지 못하다는 생각에 미안하기 까지하다. 내가 할도리를 못하고 있다는 Not good enough 라는 깊...

In my rather short time working as a Family Relationship and Communication consultant, I have discovered that Korean American families desperately need help with effective communication.
