Prayer for My Children Day 25-Servant's heart
Day 25: Servant's heart: "God, please help my children develop servants' hearts, that they may serve wholeheartedly, as if they were serving the Lord, not men." (Ephesians 6:7)
Vision was the buzz words when I was in college as a young adult. Every college aged Christian circle talked about, preached about, contemplated about, and prayed about what our vision was. What was God calling us to do? We wanted to know! Many from my college group committed themselves to go into full time ministry to become pastors and missionaries. Truthfully, I felt a little convicted that I did not have that "vision" from God to become a pastor or a missionary. In retrospect, I wish I had enjoyed the youth that was allowed to me at that season of my life without worrying too much about what my vision was. Maybe we should stop asking young people what their vision/calling is. I believe vision is not only about career. It's a life style.
My current attitude about vision/calling is this. In life, when a small door opens up whether it be a job, education, relationship... then I walk through it. But when all doors are shut, I wait. I wait in the waiting room preparing myself for the next step by working on intimate relationship with God and studying about others. So when a door opens up again, I am ready and better prepared. I believe walking through series of small doors is being a faithful and a responsible servant. Some small door that open up will not be glamorous or desirable to you. It will sometimes seem demeaning and back tracking. It may seem meaningless and stupid. But humble yourself and walk through it and do good. It will lead you somewhere better.
Second, stop asking what your great calling is. Ask how you can benefit others, what can you do that will help others. Altruistic motives will bring you good works and serve other men. When you allow the blessings of God flow through you, you will be able to serve God and men. That, I believe is vision that we can all comprehend. That vision may not look like a great career in a fancy place, or even a missionary work in a jungle but whoever/whatever God puts in front of us today, we serve them wholeheartedly as if we are serving the Lord.
