Prayer for My Children Day 31: A heart for missions

Day 31: Heart for missions: "Lord, please help my children to develop a desire to see your glory declared among the nations, your marvelous deeds among all peoples." (Psalm 90:3)

On one Sunday my family visited the Redeemer church in NYC, Tim Keller preached about missions. It happened to be on the day of Gay Pride parade on the streets of NYC. I was curious to hear what THE TIM KELLER had to say about missions. I had been discouraged about the whole short term missions, mission trips of local churches. To me a lot of it seemed to be about agendas and ambitions of some sort.

I remember when I went on a mission trip as a college student and realized how "we" were there to show "them" the right way and how we seemed so arrogant to even think that we knew better. I am not trying to minimize the effect of short term mission works, but I do wonder how many of us go with the understanding of genuine love and sacrifice. I have no doubt that short term mission work is beneficial to the participants. I guess, if I never went on that mission trip, I would've never realized the disparity of segregation and arrogance we carry in our hearts as people from a better part of the world.

Tim Keller explained simply that mission work is to reach out to, cross over to, immerse into a different culture. Different culture- different ethnicity, different geological location, different religion, different gender, different belief, different socio-economical group, different family system....etc.etc.etc. To me, that was so clear and biblical! When my family first adopted and got involved with adoption ministry, claiming that adoption IS mission work - actually, it's embracing a child into a Christian family, can be more of an active mission work. One pastor told me that it is not a mission work and they will not get involved with it. I was shocked and broken hearted. How do you say adoption is not missions. You give your all to give an orphaned child a home, giving Christ's love. Which part about that is not missions? What about a person who knits scarves to deliver to inmates? As she knits those scarves one by one she prays for the inmates...what part about that is not mission work?

I pray that my children will have the generosity and passion to share the truth of the Gospel with all those around them. They will actively and passively share God's love where they are daily. And if anyone is called to go over to a different geological location then, may they be willing and blessed.

This is the last of Prayer for My Children entries. While praying and writing for my children, I became more prayerful and peaceful about the well-being of my children. More hopeful about their walk with God, more compassionate about the struggles of being in the world but not of the world. What a huge task! I pray for them every day in humility and faithfulness.
